Cramer Chemical Company is founded by brothers Frank and Chuck Cramer. The company’s first product, a liniment to treat Chuck’s sprained ankle, is developed in their mother’s kitchen.

1918

Walter P. Keith, Sr., an employee of Seiberling Rubber Company, purchases the trade name, formulas and tangible assets of the Hygienic Dental Rubber Company located in Port Huron, Michigan. The company had ceased operations in 1915. At that time, they only had one product on the market – Vulcanite, a hard rubber used in the dental industry.

Mr. Keith uses the Seiberling lab to revise and improve Hygienic’s formulas and arranges for their manufacture under contract by Seiberling. The bulk materials are packaged and marketed by Walter out of his attic.

The U.S. Olympic track and field team selects Frank and Chuck Cramer as its first athletic trainers.

1932

Along with Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, Frank Cramer becomes one of the founding fathers of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

The Hygenic Dental Rubber Company changes its name to The Hygenic Dental Manufacturing Company to reflect the company’s expansion outside of dental rubber.

Cramer co-founders, Frank and Chuck Cramer, fund and help organize the first meeting for an organization that is now known as the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).

Hygenic builds and occupies its first owned factory at 1245 Home Avenue. This remains the corporate headquarters today.

Cramer holds the first Cramer Student Trainer Workshop as an initiative to elevate the athletic trainer profession. These legendary student workshops are still being conducted today.

Cramer Chemical Company changes its name to Cramer Products, Inc., reflecting a product line that is broader than just chemically based products.

1968

Donna Pudvan and Skip Allen, two therapists using bulk dental dam for physical therapy, along with Walter P. Keith, Sr., develop the idea of a product called Thera-Band®. Originally, the Thera-Band exerciser band was only manufactured in black.

The Hygienic Dental Manufacturing Company changes its name to The Hygenic Corporation as the business begins to expand beyond the dental market.

1978

The Hygenic Corporation introduces the TheraBand brand.

Bon Vital’ Inc. is founded by formulator Guenter J. Heidenberger.

Performance Health is founded with the launch of Biofreeze® Pain Reliever.

The Hygenic Corporation establishes marketing and distribution in Europe.

Hygenic’s Board of Directors approves formation of a new company: HCM - Hygenic Corporation Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. This strategic initiative lowers cost by locating the manufacturing processes near the raw material source.

Hygenic purchases J&B Foam Fabricators, Inc. and enters the rapidly growing aquatic exercise therapy market.

Hygenic purchases Frogsports Products, Inc. to continue its growth in the aquatic therapy and exercise market.

The TheraBand® Academy and the Academy’s Scientific Advisory Board (TRAC) are formed to scientifically document the benefits of resistance exercise and to promote therapeutic exercise through professional and consumer education.

The Hygenic Corporation is purchased by Blue Point Capital.

Cramer establishes its National Advisory Council by inviting six certified athletic trainers to test their products and provide feedback and advice.

Blue Point Capital sells The Hygenic Corporation to Baird Capital Partners, American Capital Strategies, and Beecken, Petty O’Keefe & Company.

Cramer acquires Cosom Sporting Goods located in Thorofare, New Jersey.

The Hygenic Corporation acquires Performance Health, Inc. and its Biofreeze® and Prossage® brands.

Cortec Group, a New York based private equity firm, announces that its affiliate, Cortec Group Fund IV, L.P., has acquired a majority interest in The Hygenic Corporation.

Cramer acquires Active Ankle Systems, Inc., the leader in ankle brace technology.

Thera°Pearl is founded by Gina Dubbe, Carol Baltazar, Gary Rezeppa and Daniel Baumwald.

Performance Health launches www.PerformanceHealth.com to provide practitioners, patients and consumers with a single point of access for the vast portfolio of its products and services. Hygenic’s Healthcare, Specialty and Dental Products group (formerly the OEM & Specialty Products Division) launches a revamped web site. The new site is designed as a “destination website” for engineers and buyers needing elastomeric type products.
