Rapid, Non-Invasive Detection of Early Lymphedema

The LymphScanner by Delfin Technologies is a non-invasive, handheld device designed for the rapid detection and assessment of localized and regional lymphedema. It is particularly valuable for identifying early-stage breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) before swelling becomes clinically apparent. Unlike circumferential tape measurements or whole-limb volumetric assessments, which may not detect changes until swelling has progressed, the LymphScanner uses tissue dielectric constant (TDC) technology to directly measure percentage water content (PWC) in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. The clinician simply places the probe against the skin, with results available within seconds—without gels, disposables, or time-consuming setup.

What distinguishes the LymphScanner from bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) systems is its site-specific measurement approach. While BIS estimates extracellular fluid volume across an entire limb segment, the LymphScanner provides localized spot and regional measurements at specific anatomical sites. This targeted approach can help identify focal edema and dermal backflow patterns that may be diluted or overlooked by whole-limb measurements. By detecting subtle tissue changes at an earlier stage, the LymphScanner can support earlier identification and intervention before lymphedema progresses to a more chronic and difficult-to-manage condition.

Its force-monitored probe promotes consistent, repeatable contact pressure between measurements, while the wipeable probe surface enables efficient turnaround between patients. This makes it easy to establish baseline measurements, monitor a patient’s response to compression therapy or manual lymph drainage, and track chronic edema over time.
