Key Material Benefits

The Aquaplast family is the only Rolyan splinting family that has 100 percent memory. The unique characteristics of the Rolyan Watercolors Perforated Thermoplastic Splinting Material give clinicians excellent control when forming the perfect-fitting splint with the ability to be revised. Offered in a full range of colors, patients and clinicians can choose from vibrant colors that match patient’s lifestyle and increase their confidence.

Excellent Clinician Control

When forming thumb spica splints, wrist splints, clamshell splints, back supports, and more, the Aquaplast splinting material features a moderate resistance to stretch for controlled molding when handled. Once removed from the splint bath, it will not stretch out of shape allowing clinicians to contour and detail the material with minimum force. When reheated, the material “remembers” its original shape and returns to it for repeated splint revisions. A temporary bond can be created by pinching together heated material while a permanent bond is created by scrubbing off the coating or removing it with a bond solvent.

Material Attributes

Offered in vibrant colors like electric blue, hot pink, and spring green, the versatile Aquaplast-T thermoplastic sheets are available in 1/8" (3.2 mm), 1/16" (1.6 mm), and 3/32" (2.4 mm) thicknesses for a variety of supportive needs. The material is offered in 13 percent and 19 percent perforation options and highlights a moderate to maximum rigidity of 59.2 kpsi, according to the Young Modulus testing value. That means it retains its shape without reinforcement.

Key Material Benefits

Watercolors is the only Rolyan material offered in a full range of colors. Like all materials in the Aquaplast™ family, it has 100 percent memory and turns translucent when heated. These unique characteristics help the clinician form the perfect-fitting splint with the ability to be revised.

Handling

Resistance to stretch: Moderate

Controlled stretch and the ability to be handled with moderate pressure. It will not stretch out of shape when removed from splint bath.

Conformability: Moderate/Maximum

Conforms to surface contours and detail when applying minimum force. Moderate degree of drape.

Memory: 100 percent

When reheated, the material “remembers” its original shape and returns to it. Allows for repeated reheating and reshaping for splint revisions.

Bonding: Coated

Create a temporary bond by pinching together heated material; however, it will come apart when cooled. Form a permanent bond by scrubbing off the coating or removing it with a bond solvent.

Rolyan Watercolors™ Perforated Thermoplastic Splinting Material

Overview

Watercolors™ is identical to Aquaplast-T™ but is offered in a variety of bright and metallic colors to improve patient compliance. As part of the Aquaplast family, Watercolors features a balance of conformability with a moderate resistance to stretch, giving clinicians more control over how much the material stretches during splint fabrication. With 100% memory, the material “remembers” its original shape when reheated and returns to it, allowing for repeated reheating and reshaping for splint revisions. It is also the only material family that becomes translucent when heated, helping the clinician identify landmarks for positioning and pressure points to provide maximum comfort for the patient.

Rolyan Spectrum of Splinting Material

Rolyan provides therapists and clinicians the largest spectrum of hand therapy products and care. Rolyan empowers every therapist with the passion to mold and shape their patients’ recovery.

Heating Instructions

The recommended method for heating splinting materials is with hot water in a splint bath.
Only use a heat gun for spot-heating and adjustments.

Indications

Splinting materials are intended to be used for fabrication of custom-molded rigid splints, orthoses, and adaptive equipment.

Best uses include:

  • Thumb spica splints
  • Finger splints
  • Hand splints
  • Wrist splints
  • Elbow splints
  • Dynamic splints
  • Foot drop splints
  • Clamshell splints
  • Splints for spasticity
  • Carpal tunnel splints
  • Pediatric splints
  • Splints for arthritis
  • Splints for burns
  • Back supports
  • Knee splints for immobilization
  • Shoulder splints
  • Foot orthotics
  • Ankle stirrup splints
  • Adaptive equipment
  • Static progressive and serial static splints

Care & Cleaning

Store at temperatures between 40° and 90°F (4° and 32°C) and less than 65 percent relative humidity. Avoid prolonged exposure to light, especially ultraviolet. Avoid exposure to corrosive and ethylene oxide fumes.

Formed splints will lose their shape in temperatures over 135°F(57°C) and should be kept away from sources of heat such as ovens, hot water, and car windows.

Clean splint with soap and lukewarm water. Allow splint and straps to dry thoroughly before reapplication.

Precautions for finished orthoses
Splint adjustments are to be made only by a health care professional, who is responsible for providing wearing instructions and precautions to other practitioners, care providers and the patient. If unusual swelling, skin discoloration or discomfort occurs, discontinue use and consult a health care professional.
