April is National Food Month. Everyone’s particular diet is filled with everything from favorite entree recipes to guilty pleasure snacks. Adjusting your nutritional intake could be inspired by a new dedication to a healthy lifestyle or to improve an already balanced diet. No matter what your reasons or goals, here are five superfoods that can be easily worked into your eating habits and are sure to improve your nutrition.
Leafy Greens
Leaves such as spinach, kale, collard greens, and mustard greens are high in vitamin A, vitamin C, and calcium. They are a nutrient rich replacement for lettuce, but can also be sautéd with olive oil or added to soups. Greens like kale can also be baked into chips with just a little olive oil and your favorite seasoning.
Whole Grains
Whole grains are an excellent source of fiber, plus a number of B vitamins and minerals. A bowl of oatmeal, with some berries added, is a great way to kick off your day. Quinoa is a protein packed replacement for rice, a great base for a veggie bowl, or a good addition to any salad. And make sure you look for “100% whole wheat flour” as the top ingredient when buying bread.
Olive Oil
Olive oil helps reduce the risk of heart disease with its vitamin E, polyphenols, and monounsaturated fatty acids. It is great to cook with, mix with vinegar for a homemade salad dressing or drizzle over pasta as a finishing touch.
Nuts
For protein and monounsaturated fats, which can reduce the risk of heart disease, nuts are a nice addition to a diet. You can eat them plain as a snack or add them to yogurt, salads, and veggie dishes. Nut butters can also be a great way to add flavor to toasts and crackers.
Fish
Many types of fish are good for protein and omega-3 fatty acids. This can also help prevent heart disease. For big meat eaters, an occasional substitution for fish could be a nice change of taste and change of pace for your nutritional health.
Adding any or all of these superfoods to your routine is bound to improve your health. Substitute for foods you eat already or search the internet for fun new recipes to try.
