Cubii Seated Exercise Case Study

With the goal of increasing the amount of strengthening exercise on Paulton & Bath Community Hospital Wards, this study was conducted in the United Kingdom. It was conducted by Ami Cook (Physical therapist) & Debbie Poulston (Physical therapist).

Background

Patients who spend the majority of their hospital stay in a sedentary position experience deconditioning. This functional decline will often impact their level of independence and could ultimately affect their time of discharge or require them to go through additional rehabilitation.

The aim of the study was to find a cost-effective solution that would not require any need for additional staffing and/or space while still being accessible for even the weakest patients.

Description

  • With the use of a grant, six Cubii machines were supplied to two community hospital wards
  • Patients were selected using eligibility criteria to ensure their safety
  • Outcome measures agreed upon
  • Staff was trained on the machines
  • Data was collected throughout the entirety of the study

Impact

  • 143 patients enrolled in the study used the Cubiis in the first 3 months
  • June 2024 was a record month, with 55 different patients collectively pedaling over 127 hours

Feedback

79 questionnaires were completed in the first 3 months

  • 96.2% of patients agreed they would use the Cubii again if they were hospitalized
  • 96.2% of patients agreed the Cubii was beneficial for them

5-Minute Test Results

  • Patients initially cycled for 5 minutes on level 1 and repeated the same test before they were discharged, with the distance from each test recorded and compared
  • 86 tests were completed in 3 months
  • The differences in the 5-minute test scores for patients from admission to discharge can be seen in the pie chart

Our Learning

  • Cubii is a simple, progressive chair-based strengthening exercise machine that many patients are keen to engage with
  • Cubii was identified to be an effective way to reduce sedentary behaviors, assisting to prevent deconditioning without the need to increase therapy staffing

Recap

Cubii machines are a low-impact exercise option that give patients an opportunity to move and build strength during their hospital stay and/or physical therapy. Having an opportunity to engage in exercise in a way that does not require lots of effort prevents patients from deconditioning and improves their chances of a faster recovery.
