It’s no secret that healthcare occupations are held majorly by women. Women make up approximately 77–80% of the entire U.S. healthcare workforce, making healthcare one of the most female-dominated major employment sectors in the country.
As of recent BLS reporting, more than 16 million women work in healthcare and social assistance roles nationwide.
Across all healthcare environments—including acute care, outpatient care, post-acute rehab, home health, and long-term care—women consistently represent the majority of workers:
Hospitals (acute care):

Outpatient & ambulatory care centers:

Home health & long-term care:

Women dominate many frontline and allied health roles:
Registered Nurses:

Nurse Practitioners:

Physical Therapists:

Occupational Therapists:

Speech-Language Pathologists:

Medical Assistants & Nursing Assistants:

Physician roles show more balance with approximately 38-40% of women holding positions as physicians and surgeons. That number is rising steadily.
So, for International Women’s Day, we want to say THANK YOU to the millions of women who work hard to care for those in need. Whether it’s in the emergency room of a hospital, or right in a patient’s home working with them to rebuild strength, your care, commitment, and passion for serving is seen and appreciated.
