There isn’t anything more refreshing than being outside on a nice summer day. For walks, games of softball, or pool time, kids of all ages come out to play in the sun. Unfortunately, children and adults are susceptible to cuts and scrapes during outdoor activities.
When those accidents happen, notify a medical professional for any major injuries. To care for minor cuts and scrapes, follow these easy steps.
1. Wash Hands
To avoid the spread of infection, thoroughly clean your hands before dealing with any open wounds.
2. Stop Bleeding
Use a bandage or cloth to apply pressure to the cut if the bleeding does not stop on its own.
3. Clean Wound
Use running water to clear out and debris from the wound. Use tweezers if needed.
4. Apply Petroleum Jelly
Use a small layer of petroleum jelly to avoid scaring or Neosporin Ointment to help prevent infection.
5. Cover Wound
If necessary, cover the injury with a bandage or gauze to keep it clean.
6. Change Dressing
Reapply new bandages or gauze at least once a day.
7. Watch for Infections
If you notice redness, warmth, or increased pain around the wound, contact a medical professional.
Taking these steps will assure anyone who encounters a minor injury will be properly taken care of. The first step, however, is to ensure your first aid kit is properly stocked and at hand.
