The Benefits of Soft Upper and Lower Extremity Braces

Over-the-counter soft braces are prefabricated, commercially available supports made from materials such as neoprene, elastic knit, fabric, or soft composite blends. Some may have rigid support stays built within them to offer more stability along with comfort. Unlike rigid supports, over-the-counter soft goods provide flexible or semi-rigid support, allow some movement for participation in daily living skills, are cost effective, readily available/applicable and require minimal fitting. These supports may be stocked in hospitals, emergency departments, orthopedic practices, rehabilitation departments, and athletic training facilities for immediate use. Common examples include:

Upper Extremity Soft Supports/Braces: Supporting Function Without Over-Restricting

Upper extremity injuries are common in daily life and sporting activities especially among individuals who perform repeated activities, manual labor, or high demand activities. Conditions such as tendonitis, sprains, mild ligament injuries, or nerve irritation can benefit from over-the-counter temporary external support. Wrist braces can reduce strain during typing or lifting. Thumb supports can unload the carpometacarpal joint during pinching activities, and elbow supports can decrease discomfort during repetitive gripping.

Soft orthoses can enhance the body’s awareness of joint position and posture as well. When recovering from an overuse injury or joint sprain, pain and fear of re-injury can lead to muscle guarding, poor movement patterns and compensatory movements. Soft orthotics can give gentle sensory input that helps the patient move more efficiently, limits painful movements and re-establish better motor patterns.

Lower Extremity Braces: Enhancing Stability and Confidence

When injury, surgery, over-use, or illness occur many people need fast solutions to help mitigate the deleterious effect of trauma especially when a limitation in mobility impacts self-care, locomotion, and work tasks. When safe functional mobility is needed soft knee and ankle braces can significantly improve stability during ambulation, navigation of stairs, kneeling, squatting, prolonged standing and various activities of daily living.

For individuals with mild joint instability or osteoarthritis, compression and light external support can diminish the feeling of loss of control. Compression knee sleeves are commonly used for mild to moderate osteoarthritis. Some of the benefits of these over-the-counter soft sleeves are improved joint warmth, pain control, deceased swelling, and enhanced proprioception which leads to greater tolerance for movement. This greater control and comfort allow greater participation in daily living skills. In the older adult, ankle instability can lead to increased fall risk. Over the counter lace up braces or elastic supports can improve stability, ankle proprioception and provide psychological comfort. Psychological comfort is also a great benefit of OTC soft braces and support. Patients have reduced anxiety, decreased fear of re-injury, feeling more safe with movement and greater confidence during activity.

OTC soft braces are ideal for mild sprains, strains, tendinitis, overuse injuries, arthritic pain, and return to activity. They can be provided with greater accessibility and allow immediate intervention. Education is key when using an OTC soft brace/support for proper donning/doffing, duration of wear, skin care, and cleaning. OTC soft braces are only a portion of the holistic approach to rehabilitation, but an essential one. Over the counter soft upper and lower extremity braces are very useful tools when used with solid clinical reasoning.

OTC soft braces and supports are ideal for a busy primary care, emergency room, orthopedic, athletic training, and rehabilitative clinic. They offer quick, affordable access for pain control, functional stability, and increased confidence to return to daily living skills.
